Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony

Last week I had the privilege to enjoy a traditional coffee ceremony inside the home of Love for the Children Academy's students, Daniel in the rural village of Chacha, Ethiopia. Mrs. Sima began with washing the freshly picked beans before roasting them over fire. After roasting, she ground up the beans to a perfect coarseness, drops the grinds into the jebena and lets it simmer for several minutes. While the coffee is being prepared, incense made from acacia trees is burned, producing a sweet aroma in the air. Once the grinds sit at the bottom, the coffee is ready! Coffee ceremonies are a social time for Ethiopians and are held three times a day.
